Lake Melissani

It’s in Sami, close to the village Karavomylos. The cave collapsed some thousand years ago, creating a magical sight. In Mythology there are many mentions that it was named after the nymph Melissanthi who took her own life, because the god Panas didn’t love her as much as she did. The many excavations that have taken place brought to the surface many objects of ancient worship. The tour in the lake is with a little boat and the best time, for you to visit, is when the sun is exactly above the fallen roof, because it creates a magical atmosphere.

Castle of Saint George

Between the villages Peratata and Travliata-in the area of Argostoli- the castle of Saint George looms.
In the official Venetian records is mentioned as Citta Di Cefalonia. Many churches and buildings remain intact in the inside and plenty notable post-Byzantine icons are kept in there from the derelict churches. It was the capital of the island until 1757. It’s open for visitors. Everyone can go there from Argostoli with bus or car, the distance is 8 kilometers.

Asso's Castle

Its construction began in 1593. It was built from the Venetians who wanted to achieve the best protection from the pirates and the invasions from the sea. Its view to the cove of Saint Kiriaki is amazing. The visitor can come across with an arched entry gate and, in the inside of it, with the ruins of the house of Venetian High Commissioner, the churches of Saint Mark and Prophet Ilias and the still-intact parts of the castle. In order to reach the castle you have to go inside the village and then follow the road that leads to the central gate.

Venetian Lighthouse and Byzantine Basilica - Fiskardo

Taking the hiking trail of the lighthouse and only in a short distance from Fiskardo there is the Venetian lighthouse and the Byzantine basilica that dates from the sixth century (after Christ). The cylindrical tower of the lighthouse looks like an ancient column.

Drogarath Cave

It was discovered three hundred years ago and opened to the public in 1963. It’s three kilometers away from Sami, in Xaliotata. The archaeologists believe that is one hundred million years old and is a rare geological phenomenon. The roof and the floor of the cave are adorned with plenty of stalactites and stalagmites and can offer a breathtaking sight to the visitor.

Monasteries - Churches

The island has strong religious history that is reflected on its monasteries and churches. The monasteries of Saint Gerasimos, the Saint protector of the island, overlooks the plateau of Omalos in the Aino. The remains of the Saint are kept in the church in a silver sarcophagus. In the inside of the old church, the entry of his hermitage exists. Its access is through a middle-sized opening, but bizarrely everyone can go in, regardless their size.
Fifteen kilometers away from Lixouri, to the west in a magical place on the edge of a rock one hundred meters high from the surface of the sea you will find the monastery of Kipouraion. In there a piece of the True Cross and a holy myrrh of Saint Dimitri Mirovliti is kept. There are many Byzantine icons. The beauty, the peace, the spirituality and spectacular sunset resurrects the soul.
In the south side of the island, on the mountain’s slope there is the community of Agrinia’s. Inside the village’s church there is an image of the Mother of Christ, Mary, with snakes. Few days before her celebratory day, on the fifteenth of August, small sized snakes, harmless, show up from the rocks behind the church’s Frankish bell tower, they reptile fearless among the visitors and inside the church. This happens every year.
Near the village Makriotika, six kilometers from Saint Efthimia, in a fascinating location with a forest full of oak trees and with a bewitching view to the Ionian sea and to the island of Ithaca there is the monastery Thematon. It was founded in the eleventh century, but was renovated, after the earthquakes, in 1953.
